COWLITZ RIVER INFO

COWLITZ RIVER INFO

The Cowlitz River is home to the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery, which opened for operation in 1968.

At the time, it was the biggest Salmon Hatchery in the world. Today, the hatchery is responsible for producing almost 13 million fish every year. Along with the Salmon Hatchery, the Cowlitz Falls Project built a fish collecting station where the fish are sorted by species and some are kept to use at the hatchery while others continue migrating upstream.

The two facilities have allowed the re-population of steelhead and salmon to the Cowlitz River upper basin for the first time since the 1960’s when the Mayfield Dam and Mossyrock Dam were built. Today, the Cowlitz River provides anglers with an exceptional sport-fishing opportunity. It continually ranks as one of Washington State’s top salmon and steelhead fishing rivers.
